The Ur Project

Documenting the craft of stacking things so they remain stacked. For a very long time.

Live USB

A GNOME desktop that boots from a USB stick on real Intel hardware. It runs as a live system, and the installer is pinned to the dash. Most people will want this one.

Get the file from the Download page.

Writing it to a stick

Write it to the whole stick, not to a partition on it. Everything on the stick is lost:

$ sudo dd if=live-usb.img of=/dev/sdX bs=4M conv=fsync status=progress

On Windows or macOS, Rufus or a similar tool does the same thing.

Installing from it

The live-install program is an icon in the main dash, and it is fully GUI based. The installation guide walks through it.

It currently installs onto an empty drive only. If you want it beside another OS you will have to wait for someone to write that code. To clear a drive first, and destroy everything on it for real:

$ sudo wipefs -a /dev/sdX

What is on it

A full GNOME desktop, and the debranded browser build of Firefox with uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger and a dark mode reader bundled, its built in AI features off, and DuckDuckGo as the default search engine.

There is also flatpak, and several flatpak-repo-* packages that add flathub and other remotes, which between them cover most of what a desktop needs that the repositories do not carry yet.
