The Ur Project

Documenting the craft of stacking things so they remain stacked. For a very long time.

WSL

A Windows Subsystem for Linux distribution: a console system with systemd, running on WSL's own kernel.

Get the file from the Download page.

Installing it

You need WSL 2, version 2.4.4 or later. wsl --version shows which you have, and wsl --update gets you there. Then, in PowerShell, from the folder you downloaded it to:

PS> wsl --install --from-file .\wsl-base.wsl

Double-clicking wsl-base.wsl in Explorer does the same thing.

The distribution registers as urproject. The first time it starts it asks for a user name and a password and creates that account, which can use sudo. After that it starts as that user:

PS> wsl -d urproject

On an older WSL

Import it instead. You choose the name and the folder its disk goes in:

PS> wsl --import urproject $env:LOCALAPPDATA\WSL\urproject .\wsl-base.wsl --version 2
PS> wsl -d urproject

Removing it

This takes the distribution and everything in it:

PS> wsl --unregister urproject
