The Ur Project

Documenting the craft of stacking things so they remain stacked. For a very long time.

Generic cloud

A headless qcow2 disk image for VMs. It boots to a console and grows to fill its disk.

Get the file from the Download page.

It has no login of its own

The administrator account, its SSH key, the hostname and the repositories all come from a config drive: a cidata NoCloud seed or a config-2 OpenStack seed. cloud-config(5) describes what goes in one.

Without a seed attached you will not be able to log in, unless you override the boot prompt to bypass the no-prompt startup sequence. That is on purpose: better than shipping a wide open image and locking it down later.

What is not in it

The full standard kernel is there, but not much firmware, so hardware support is thin compared to the Live USB. This image is for a VM or a cloud provider rather than for bare metal.

It also has no cloud-init, so an environment that insists on querying an HTTP userdata service rather than reading a seed disk will not configure it.
