A demo - a local package build
I've been talking a lot about what it means to be able to do easy modifications and not really doing a good job of how this looks in reality. So it's time for a demonstration.
Today's post is just this: a video showing you what a "local" package build looks like from an end user perspective. The tooling used in the video is only the pkg tool. There is no other tooling used. The pkg tool knows how to reach the remote repositories. It knows how to start a build sandbox, it knows that the source URLs for the package it needs to build are in the recipe. So, it can do everything that the build server does. It's fully using the same code flow as the dispatch component.
Here's each phase:
- the video starts with a download of the original source.
- the contents of the recipe are shown.
- the
designer fmtformatter is run. This step is optional. - a local signing key is created. All package builds need a signing key.
- the actual build is started.
- after completion, the package is published into a local repo, and a bundle is created from the local repo structure.
- the local bundle is installed on the local system. This is the only step that needs
sudoaccess.
The video wraps up with running the created hello program and cleaning up by uninstalling it as well.
You can follow along with the build phase even though it goes past pretty fast - you may want to pause it if it's too fast. The video is also posted on the discord server and if you have questions about any of this, I encourage you to drop in and come chat.
Here's the video:
Enjoy.
